Our first ‘Plastic Pick-Up’ event at Barker Inlet South Wetland

Fair GO SA started its long-term Plastic pick-up project on the 1st of NOV 2020, and this project will continue until the end of the next year 2021.

Plastic Pick-up is a Fair GO SA initiative in collaboration with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield council. We will be cleaning the plastic waste at the Barker Inlet South Wetland.

Did you know that …
• the average human consumes as much as 50,000 microplastic particles each year (Ref 3,4, 5)?
• trace amounts of plastic are found, not only in 93% of bottled water, but also in the seafood we eat, our fruit and vegetable produce, and 90% of all edible salt brands (Ref 1-14)?
• the accumulative, long-term effect of ingesting toxic, microplastic chemicals may lead to serious health risks including unbalanced gut flora, impaired immune function, and even cancer (Ref 6, 7, 10), making microplastic pollution a priority concern for scientists and policymakers for the past 5 years (Ref 6,7,10)?

In fact…
• Science shows that over 90% of discarded plastics found in everyday packaging, clothes, toys and appliances are not recycled, and ends up as land and sea waste (Ref 1-14).
• Over time, as they are carried by wind and water, across the land, along the waterways and to the ocean, these discarded plastics break down slowly into tiny particles – microplastics – which are dropped along the way (Ref 10).
• Microplastics are now found to be present in every natural physical element on earth (Ref 2).
• Microplastics are unintentionally eaten by the water-life that becomes our seafood (Ref 7, 8, 9, 10).
• The fruit, vegetables, grasses and grains that grow from microplastic-polluted soil and water also contaminate the animals and people that eat this produce (Ref 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).

But we can still make a difference if we act NOW.
