6 FEB 2021, ‘Stop Violence, Say NO to Wage Theft’ Rally @ Chinatown, Adelaide

Fair GO SA Inc. and the SA Labour Info Hub organised a ‘Stop Violence, Say NO to Wage Theft’ Rally at Adelaide Chinatown on the 6th of Feb 2021. Also, we had the special speakers such as Hon. Irene Pnevmatikos MLC., Peter Russell from CFMEU, and Jamie Newlyn from SA Unions, and some other fellow associations participated and supported our rally.

Many people think that only international students are prone to wage theft issues, in fact, it’s not. There are also many mature-aged adult migrants experiencing wage theft issues, especially those new coming migrants who are not good at English, as they are also not familiar with the Australian legislation and do not know how to protect their rights.

(Mr Jamie Newlyn from SA Unions)

There is a huge grey area in which our laws and legislation cannot completely protect our wage theft victim from standing up and speak freely, and the current laws and legislation cannot protect our wage theft victims from blacklist and blackmail revenge. Here, we would like to urge the policymakers and the government agencies to think further: what else can we do to protect our wage theft victims from getting revenge from their previous employers. What can the policymakers, government agencies, and the Adelaide councils do to stop Adelaide's illegal practices? What else can we do to promote a safer environment for wage theft victims to stand up to speak out? Furthermore, as individuals, what else can we do to support wage theft victims and stand up together against the illegal business.

(Hon. Irene Pnevmatikos MLC.)
(Peter Russell from CFMEU)

Additionally, wage theft is a type of discrimination and modern slavery. Some people discriminate against international students and migrants in Australia and think they do not deserve legal pay. Modern slavery is against human rights.

(Jacky Chen from SA Labour Info Hub)
